Session 4C

Speaker: Sarah Messbauer

Who Tells Their Story: The UC Davis Grad Student Experience in Their Own Words

In this session Sarah Messbauer, the 2016-17 Graduate Student Assistant to the Dean and Chancellor (GSADC), will explore some of the most important themes that emerge from stories told by UC Davis graduate students about themselves and their experiences on campus. Drawing upon her own experiences as GSADC as well as survey data collected through the Doctoral Exit Survey, UC Wellness Survey, and the Great Big Graduate Review, Dr. Messbauer will highlight individual and collective stories that speak to the powerful role of graduate advisors in making (or breaking) the graduate student experience. To close, Sarah will use her own story as a UC Davis graduate student to highlight actionable strategies for graduate advisors looking to enhance their positive impact on students who face major barriers to success.
